  • BS 3621 is the British Standard for thief-resistant, key-operated locks fitted to external domestic doors. It sets out the minimum security requirements a lock must meet to offer a high level of protection against burglary, including:

    • At least five levers, making the lock far harder to pick than standard three-lever alternatives

    • Hardened steel plates or inserts, protecting against drilling attempts

    • Resistance to forced entry, including drilling, picking, and manipulation

    • A bolt that throws at least 20mm into the door frame keep, giving the door extra strength against kicking or ramming

    • Robust internal mechanisms built to withstand thousands of lock and unlock cycles without wearing down

    Every BS 3621 lock is independently tested and certified by the British Standards Institution (BSI), so you can trust it's been through rigorous, real-world scrutiny before it's fitted onto your door.

  • There are several reasons why BS 3621-compliant locks are important:

    • Security. They're one of the most effective ways to protect your home against break-in attempts, giving you greater peace of mind.

    • Insurance. Most UK insurers require the final exit door (and often all external doors) to be fitted with a BS 3621-compliant lock. If you're burgled and your locks don't meet the required standard, your insurer could reduce your payout or reject your claim altogether. It's one of the most common reasons home insurance claims are disputed after a break-in.

    • Landlord obligations. If you're a landlord, it matters even more. Many tenancy agreements and some local authority licensing schemes set BS 3621 as the minimum standard for tenant safety, so this can shift from an insurance recommendation to a legal requirement.

  • If your locks are old, you're not sure whether they meet BS 3621, or your insurer has told you your current locks aren't up to standard, it's worth having them checked. We can assess your existing locks and let you know exactly where you stand.
